CHIETI SCALO, 30 OTTOBRE 2024

Report: Giancarlo Gobbi, 4 Novembre 2024

On October 30, 2024, Walter Tosto’s headquarters in Chieti Scalo hosted a seminar titled “Preparing for the Integration of Molecule Production and Nuclear Energy.” The event brought together industry experts, including representatives from ASME and SAIPEM, to discuss the challenges and opportunities of integrating nuclear technologies into molecule production, with a particular focus on hydrogen as an energy carrier.

ASME representatives highlighted their ongoing efforts to develop and update codes and standards that support the safe and efficient production and transportation of hydrogen. They emphasized the importance of establishing robust guidelines to ensure the reliability and safety of hydrogen infrastructure, particularly in offshore environments.

SAIPEM shared insights into their recent projects and research initiatives aimed at advancing offshore hydrogen production and transportation. They discussed the technical challenges associated with offshore hydrogen pipelines and the need for comprehensive standards to address these issues. Notably, SAIPEM has been involved in testing materials and coatings for subsea pipelines transporting hydrogen, addressing knowledge gaps in offshore applications OnePet.

The seminar underscored the critical role of integrating nuclear energy into hydrogen production as a means to advance decarbonization efforts and enhance the flexibility and efficiency of energy systems. Participants agreed that collaboration among industry stakeholders is essential to develop the necessary infrastructure and standards to support this integration.

This event aligns with Walter Tosto’s ongoing commitment to innovation and collaboration in the energy sector. The company has previously participated in significant projects, such as the manufacturing of Europe’s first vacuum vessel sector for the ITER fusion experiment, in collaboration with Ansaldo Nucleare and Westinghouse Mangiarotti.

Overall, the seminar provided a platform for knowledge exchange and set the stage for future collaborations aimed at integrating nuclear energy into molecule production, with hydrogen playing a pivotal role in the transition to a low-carbon energy future.
